The Fish Bank

Environmental & Sustainability Policy

Purpose: The Fish Bank is committed to operating in a way that minimises our environmental impact and promotes sustainability. We recognise the importance of protecting the environment for future generations and aim to integrate sustainable practices into every aspect of our business. This policy outlines our commitment to reducing waste, conserving resources, sourcing responsibly, and continuously improving our environmental performance.

Commitments:

1. Sustainable Sourcing:

    • We source our fish and seafood from suppliers who follow responsible and sustainable fishing practices, such as those certified by organisations like the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC).
    • We do not use endangered or overfished species to support the health of marine ecosystems (as recommended by the Marine Conservation Society Good Fish Guide).

2. Waste Reduction and Recycling:

    • We minimize waste through efficient inventory management, a limited menu (only high selling items), and cooking food to order.
    • We only use eco-friendly biodegradable, compostable, or recyclable packaging and utensils.
    • We segregate waste and work with recycling partners to ensure that materials such as cardboard, glass, and used cooking oil are recycled appropriately.

3. Energy and Water Conservation:

    • We prioritise energy from renewable sources, our current provider supplies 95% renewable energy.
    • We strive to reduce energy consumption by using energy-efficient appliances and working practices, and by maintaining equipment to ensure it operates efficiently.
    • We commit to reducing water usage through the implementation of water-saving devices and regular monitoring of water consumption.

4. Carbon Footprint Reduction:

    • We endeavour to reduce our carbon footprint, by optimising supplier delivery schedules, encouraging suppliers to use eco-friendly transportation, and prioritising renewable energy options for our premises.

5. Employee Engagement and Training:

    • We educate and engage our staff on sustainable practices, including proper waste segregation, energy conservation, and responsible sourcing.
    • We encourage employees to suggest and implement new ideas for reducing our environmental impact.

6. Community Involvement:

    • We engage with our local community by participating in or supporting local environmental initiatives, such as town clean-ups or conservation projects.

7. Continuous Improvement:

    • We will regularly review and update our environmental and sustainability practices to ensure they remain effective and aligned with current best practices.
    • We will set measurable environmental objectives and monitor our progress towards achieving them.
